Get The Scoop On Concussions From Your Tallahassee Chiropractor

By Javier Mcnear

Concussions are one of those things that are mentioned in passing, so people know a little bit about them. Unfortunately, most people don't think they are that serious, which is harmful because they really are quite serious. In case you or someone you care about ever gets one, it is a good idea to at least know the basics and consult a Tallahassee Chiropractor if needed.

A concussion is a part of a much broader set of injuries collectively known as Traumatic Brain Injuries, also known as TBIs. While this sounds alarming in name, concussions actually belong to the mildest category. However, do not take them for granted because of this. They are easy to get if you play sports, especially contact ones, or have been in an accident.

Most people make a full recovery within a few days and can go about their daily lives. Be aware though that the symptoms could take a few weeks to go away completely in some cases. Symptoms include memory loss, blurred or impaired vision, confusion or disorientation and trouble concentrating.

The biggest problem with concussions is that once you get your first one, you are going to be more susceptible to them for the rest of your life. It's kind of like twisting your ankle. Once you twist it, even with a full recovery, it becomes easier and easier to twist it again in the future. That's why they have to be taken so seriously and not brushed off.

Athletes are quite susceptible to concussions, especially those who play in team or contact sports. But athletes are not the only ones who suffer head blows. Those who are a victim of a car accident or even a bike accident can also get one.

At least 25% of people who end up with a concussion get assessed by medical personnel. This is potentially very dangerous as a bad head injury can have lasting effects and if further injury happened before full recovery is achieved the damage can be compounded. The same sort of thing happens with repeat concussions.
