LGBTQ Parent Support San Rafael CA PFLAG

By Arthur Russell

When it comes to families of individuals living in alternative lifestyles, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers often need support. For, it can often be difficult for family members to understand why a family member identifies in this regard. As a method of support to the individual and family, it can often be beneficial for families to attend a lgbtq Parent support san rafael ca meeting.

In some cases, the reason for a lack of support in this area is due to a lack of meeting space. In others, it is because the city, town, state or country has a majority of conservative residents whom have blocked these type meetings. When this is the case, it is important that those seeking help in the local area come together, find a meeting location and organize a support group.

While PFLAG stands for parents for lesbian and gay individuals, these groups are often inclusive of all parents of those recognized under the LGBTQ umbrella. While this is the case, these and other groups whom have held on to original titles still fail to recognize bisexual, transgender and other members of the community. As such, it is up to current members to create more equality by suggesting a name change which is inclusive of all those whom identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community at large, whether friend, ally, member, staff or volunteer.

When forming a new support group, it is important to create a title which represents all members of the LGBTQ+ community. For, while some groups may want to hold on to old titles, it is important that all those attending groups be represented and visible.

While there may be a great deal of opposition, it is still important for those whom are strong willed and can handle rejection to do so on an ongoing basis. For, in doing so, the individual will gain a great deal of respect from others whom may have been feeling left out of a group for years. Whereas, groups often grow much stronger over time when all individuals involved are included in name and practice.

When an individual can make progress in this regard, groups which are more inclusive are often more successful. Whether a staff member, volunteer or community representative, when an individual feels included, the group often becomes stronger. As a result, a simple change in a name to reflect all those involved can have a major impact on the overall success of the group.

In some cases, group dynamics can include in-fighting among members within a group. For example, when proposing a name change, there will most likely be opposition from some members of the group. It is important when this is the case that the individual making the proposal have a good argument as to how and why the change would impact the group in positive ways.

Then, in the mid-late 1990s, the group changed the name once again to The Boston Pride Committee in an effort to be even more inclusive. While there were some protests, when members of PFLAG and other groups approached the committee, the name became official and has remained the same since that time.
