Common Home Remedies Used

The use of specific spices, vegetables or well known items to treat an ailment is what is referred to as home remedies. Some may not have medicinal value, but are used as a result of being passed down from one generation to another. Others have however being proven to treat simple ailments such as head aches, sprains, or fevers. Each home remedy could help treat different ailments.

If you suffer from severe headaches from time to time, a sweet smelling solution of peppermint essential oil could come in handy. This is convenient since it is not expensive and it is also natural as well. Apply it into your temples and leave it for some thirty minutes to soothe your nerves.

If you suffer from bloating, a condition characterized by an abnormal swelling of the abdominal area, try taking a cup of dandelion tea every day. The tea helps to reduce the retained body water that is in excess by inducing the production of bile juice from the liver. The bile also breaks down fatty meals that cause bloating.

Massaging, peppermint oil menthol and ice are a good cure for back pains or aches if you are affected by them. You can apply peppermint ice massage. This involves first mixing a cup of water with about two drops of peppermint oil and freezing it. After freezing, remove the cup, empty the contents into an ice bag and have a friend apply it on your back smoothly.

For sore throats or persistent coughs, quick syrup made of a mixture of cayenne pepper (1/4 teaspoon), water (2 tablespoons), apple cider vinegar (one teaspoon), and honey (one tablespoon) could be very helpful. Honey has traditionally be known as a very good cure for persistent coughs over time. A mixture with pepper or lemon works very well for sore throats too.

If a brain freeze occurs, normally when something cold touches the roof of your mouth on a very hot day, you can reduce the pain by sticking your thump onto the palate and then apply pressure on it for about thirty to sixty seconds. This pain, caused by the sudden change of temperature in the tissues, disappears as a result of the heat generated from the tongue.

If you suffer from insomnia, try this for a change. Instead of your regular midnight snack, take a dose of tart cherry juice before going to sleep. The melatonin contained in the tart cherry has been tested and proved to help very much in providing a good night sleep.

For muscle aches and pulls, wrap a chunk of blue cheese on your shins when they are numb or have pain. The blue cheese behaves like a cold therapy for the muscles, cooling the nerves and reducing the pain much faster. Taking a warm shower also helps the muscles to relax and reduce the tension on the legs. If you have inflammation or you are bruised, try rubbing an ice pack on the affected part for about a half an hour.
