Having Back Pain? Check With A Spine Specialist Soon

By Jerome Hoffman

At some point in their lives, eighty percent of the United States population will suffer from back pain. Whether it is the 'weekend warrior' that doesn't properly stretch before golfing and now has lower back pain, someone that slips on the ice and now has a severe case of coccydynia (tailbone pain), or a person that is born with congenital scoliosis, we understand that neck and back pain can disrupt lives and, in addition to intense physical pain, is often the cause of stress, anxiety and depression for patients and their families. Here are some interesting facts about back pain - did you know:

Possible Long-Term Complications: As many long-term back sufferers will attest, back pain is a condition that tends to get worse with time. Not only will discomfort and decreased range of motion continue to worsen, but there are a host of other complications that may result from it - sleeplessness, restlessness, anxiety and depression are all symptoms for many long-term back pain sufferers. In addition, your work, family and social relationships could all be impacted with severe back pain (many sufferers of long-term back pain have issues with employment, family responsibilities, and social withdrawal - the back pain starts to impact many areas of the sufferers life) and your general health could decline drastically.

Back Pain Issues That Arise Later in Life

Discomfort is not an inevitable part of the aging process, and in this day and age you do not have to just "deal with" your back pain. There are several treatments available which are minimally invasive or non-surgical that can specifically help with back pain in the elderly. These treatments can significantly reduce the effects of osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, or other spinal disorders or conditions that can naturally develop with age.

That most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic? That means they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection or cancer. The cause is sudden or extreme movement that triggers a condition, trauma, sports accidents, slip and falls, automobile accidents, fractures, etc... There are any number of ways that back pain can occur.

Surgery: Surgery is intended to be a permanent way to treat spinal disorders. While this option is much more invasive than the other options, it can and many times is an effective solution. Some back problems can only be treated with surgery and/or when all other avenues to help with the back pain have failed.
