Finding Effective Seborrheic Dermatitis Skin Care

By Karina Frost

Few things can cause more grief than waking in the morning to find that complexion problems have erupted on your face or body. There is an unpredictable but fairly common problem that can do just that. Seborrheic dermatitis effects the lives of people in a way that is both embarrassing and difficult to predict or prevent. Knowing as much as possible about effective seborrheic dermatitis skin care treatments can help those who suffer from this issue.

It is not known what exactly causes this problem for some people but not others but it has been likened to dandruff and many times appears next to the hair line on the face and neck. It can also show up in body creases such as around the nose or on the chin and mid-forehead. Facial areas where there can be large concentrations of oil build up are most prone to being affected.

It is known that the body's production of excessive oils enhance the growth of a lipophilic yeast fungus that originates in the Malassezia genus. This is an intricate part of the eruption of scaly patches on face and body. Left untreated the problem will become worse over time. Treatment can be done with or without doctors involvement and some home remedies are very effective.

The homemade remedies involve items found in most kitchens. One recipe suggests using a lemon juice and garlic mixture on the affected area. Leaving it there for five to ten minutes and then using a mild cleanser to bathe the area. Olive oil treatments have also proven successful for some people as well as fish oil supplements on a daily basis. Another home treatment that nearly everyone has access to is sunshine and exercise. They have been shown to be very effective in many cases.

The items that can be purchased at the neighborhood drug stores without prescription are generally meant to be used on the scalp. Knowing which ingredients are most effective for relief can lead to a solution without the expense of a doctor visit. Use of these shampoos on facial and body areas can be very effective. One of the best ingredients to look for is Salicylic acid. This is an exfoliate that dissolves the cells of skin allowing the old tissues to be washed away. Removal of dead cells is an essential part of an optimum treatment plan.

Fungicides such as coal tar and tea tree oil work to kill the malassezia that causes this problem on your face. Coal tar can be found in most shampoo treatments and tea tree oil can be purchased separately or as an ingredient in many creams. Tea tree oil, when tested in clinical trials has demonstrated the highest level of success in treating this problem.

Zinc has been shown to reduce the amount of sebum produced by the face and diminish the severity of the problem when it arises. It also helps to prevent flakes from forming on a face and evening out the texture of the skin in the affected area. Checking over the counter products for these ingredients can help to control the problem and may prevent a visit to your doctor.

When the problem is severe it is recommended that a doctor be contacted for help. Corticosteroid treatments are effective for relief from the itching and pain of the rash. Doctors are able to prescribe shampoos and treatments for patients that are not available over the counter. Most times medical treatment can bring relief when other remedies have failed even if only on a temporary basis.
