Why Mobile Alabama Urgent Care May Be More Appropriate Than The Emergency Room

By Diane Scott

The emergency room is the first choice for many people who get sick or hurt no matter how serious the situation is. They don't even consider the possibility that there might be someplace else where the treatment is equally as good as that found in the emergency room. They might be surprised to learn the waiting room is usually not as full and the bill is not as high in a Mobile Alabama urgent care clinic. This is the best place for patients experiencing non-life threatening conditions.

There are certainly times when a call to 911 can make the difference between life and death. Those exhibiting symptoms of a heart attack, who have uncontrollable bleeding, or are unconscious need emergency room treatment. A drug overdose or vehicle crash victim should be taken to the hospital for immediate treatment as well. Less critical situations, that end up in the trauma unit, tie up professionals whose time is best spent with patients who are in dire need.

Primary physicians are not always available after hours, so patients have to rely on high priority facilities to examine aches and pains, fever, flu, and colds. Those who need shots and vaccinations can get them in these clinics. Most are not open twenty-four hours a day, but they tend to have extended hours for the convenience of patients.

Other walk-ins, like retail centers, are good options for individuals who have minor injuries, want their blood pressure or heart rate checked, or need shots and vaccinations. They are typically found in pharmacies, malls, and big box stores. These facilities are not staffed by doctors, but they do have qualified nurse practitioners and certified assistants.

In many places, there are facilities that specialize in pediatric priority treatment. In these clinics, only children below a certain age, usually sixteen, are seen. Adult clinics may see both adult and minor patients. Others specialize in adults only. Before you decide to visit one of these facilities you should call ahead to see what kind of treatment they offer.

One of the reasons some people avoid these clinics is because they are afraid the qualify of treatment will not match that of the hospital. High priority facilities are staffed with highly experienced and qualified professionals with all the appropriate credentials and licenses required at any other medical facility.

Most of these types of facilities accept insurance, and almost all of them accept Medicare and Medicaid patients. The people who come in are expected to pay in full at the time of treatment. Those with insurance may have to pay a deductible. Whether or not the visit is covered will depend on the type of policy the patient has.

Emergency rooms are designed for those with critical and life threatening injuries and illnesses. High priority clinics are great options for individuals who have less need but require prompt and qualified attention. Understanding the difference between the two is important.
