Components About Sunless Tanning Products

By Haywood Hunter

Sunless tanning, which is also called self tanning, requires the use of certain chemicals on the skin to create a result that is similar to that from a tan received from lying in the natural sunlight or a booth. It has increased in popularity since the 1960s, when health officials voiced their concern that increased sun exposure and tanning beds were causing skin cancer and other health problems. There are numerous sunless tanning products available.

These are a healthy option for those who want to change their skin tone without compromising skin health by exposure to direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays. Goods are made in varying forms. The formula comes as lotions, creams, gels and sprays and should be applied directly to skin.

An active ingredient that is found in many of these goods is dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. This chemical, when applied to the outer layer of skin, temporarily darkens the appearance of the skin. This color change does not wash off, but gradually fades when the dead skins come off. Most of the tans last for a few days to a week, depending on the product and usage. Generally, sunless products do not include any form of sunscreen, as they are not designed for outdoor application and use.

There are formulas that contain high levels of carotenoid. Beta-carotene is both natural and permanent and so formulas that are carotenoid-based are considered effective. Carotenoids are present in the fruits and vegetables we eat, this is what gives them their natural color. Afamelanotide and Tyrosine are other chemicals commonly included in sunless formulas.

Another option is taking tanning pills. Most of these supplements include beta-carotene, which is not known to have adverse effects. However, excessive intake of these pills has been known to give the skin an unfavorable yellow or orange hue. Some of these pills include canthaxanthin, which is considered unhealthy by some, as large doses can cause skin to turn orange and hives to develop.

Bronzers also offer a temporary tan. Typically this gives a more subtle darkening and glow to the skin. Most of these can be bought in moisturizer, sprays, lotions, gels, powders and mousses. Some make-ups include elements of bronzer as well.

Overall, these products are thought carry less risk that techniques involved direct exposure to the sun. They offer a natural, even tan when they are used properly. For best results, keep these application tips in mind: exfoliate before application, lightly apply the formula for even results, do the top part of the hands last and allow liquid-based mixes to completely dry.

Sunless tanning products allow individuals to change or improve the appearance of their skin with a low risk of developing a health issues, such as skin cancer. The formula is available as a pill, or can be applied topically as a gel, spray, cream or lotion. Most of these products do not include any form of sun protection. The results cannot be washed off the skin, but they will gradually fade with time.
