Types Of Treatment For Sleep Apnea That Requires No Surgery

By Debra Foster

Because it is important to sleep for about 6-9 hours, all efforts to stop whatever that can prevent this is welcome. One of the things that can prevent it is sleep apnea. The good news is that there are some natural ways of dealing with this disorder so surgery is not the only cure. All the noninvasive treatment for sleep apnea do not cost much and they work so well. It is important to know them so that you can be a source of joy to others who have this problem.

One cure for this disorder that has been used severally is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). This is done with a mask and a machine that pumps air to the person with the disorder. The air gets into the nostrils through the mask while the mask receives the air through a long tube that connects it to the air tank. Thus, there will be no cessation as there is a direct supply to the person's airways.

However, some people are not comfortable with the CPAP mask. For them, other methods can be used and that includes positional therapy. Since this disorder normally results when a person sleeps in a supine position, making sure that the person affected sleep by the side can stop the problem. This can be achieved by using a device that can hold the waist or back.

A very simple way of stopping this is by avoiding alcohol and cigarette. It is important to avoid alcohol because it has the ability to relax the throat muscles; this makes snoring inevitable when sleeping. In the same vein, nicotine in cigarette relaxes the airway muscles and the neural reflexes. The smoke from cigarette also makes the upper airways to be inflamed.

A person's occupation can make him or her more susceptible to sleep apnea. That is why you will hear complaints about this more frequently from caterers and firefighters. These people have to do everything possible to minimize the quantity of smoke they inhale if they cannot avoid it completely. One good measure they can take is wearing a nose mask.

You can also prevent this by eating well. When your feeding is targeted at losing weight, you will hardly have problems with sleep apnea. The result is more effective when feeding right is combined with doing some exercise as the two are measures of combating obesity. This is obviously the most cost-effective way of achieving this since it also reduces your consumption level.

Consuming antioxidant supplements also helps to solve the problems caused by sleep apnea. Antioxidants are recommended because oxidative stress is the primary factor behind this problem. Oxidative stress is bound to occur when free radicals are high in the blood. The antioxidants reduce the level of free radicals, reduces oxidative stress and makes the individual enjoy sleep. Increased oxidative stress makes it difficult for the blood vessels to contract and relax. Another way of expressing this is endothelial dysfunction. By taking Vitamin E and beta-carotene, oxidative stress can be minimized.

Giving patients some vitamin D helps to reduce this problem too. Tests conducted on those suffering from sleep apnea revealed the lack of this vitamin. Vitamin D is useful here because of its role in insulin regulation and inflammation that results from insulin resistance.
