Miconazole Nitrate: A Short Guide To Uses And Procedures

By Adah Determan

Miconazole nitrate is one of first lines of defence towards any kind of fungal infection and it is very, very effective. Fungal infections are very common during the rainy season but thankfully, catching them early means that you can treat them quickly as well. Miconazole nitrate 2 % antifungal cream is readily available in several formulations and to help you out, we've created a short guide that should prove helpful.

Chemistry The chemical compound works by preventing the formation of ergosterol. Ergosterol is critically important to the normal functioning of a fungal cell. The compound contributes to the formation of a healthy cell membrane of a cell. The compound prevents the formation of the covering membrane and weakens the cell making it delicate and friable. Cell membranes are vitally important as they form the first defence barrier for the fungal cells. If the cell membrane is delicate, the fungal cells are susceptible to attacks from almost any predator.

The fungal cells disintegrate with regular use of the antifungal cream and the compound is very effective in fungal conditions like athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm etc. Most doctors also recommend topical application of miconazole for oral and vaginal infections as well. In the last few years, miconazole has gained dubious popularity as a hair growth aid. There is no proof to back up this claim but topical applications of a similar chemical compound called ketoconazole has been shown to increase hair growth. As a result, the compound is under active research to ascertain its hair growth properties.

When starting this compound for antifungal treatment, doctors recommend brand name and type of form you will need for your case. Then you must read the instructions very carefully to make sure you will not receive a reaction from using this type of cream. If you are using this on a skin infection, you want to apply the lotion twice a day to the area that is infected. But make sure to wash your hands before and after using the cream so the infection does not spread and germs are not consumed.

If you are diabetic or have any re-occurring and constant medical conditions, your doctor may prescribe other medication to offset affects that may come from using this cream as some of these conditions may worsen an infection. If you have diabetes, your primary physician may increase anti-diabetic medication to bring down your blood sugar into control and help with the fungal infection as well. Most patients see an improvement in 10 -- 15 days. However, if the infection does not clear up, check with your doctor immediately.
