Why Cerebral Palsy Support Groups For Parents Are Important

By Anita Ortega

Parents, especially mothers normally go through a lot when their children suffer from a complicated disease. Cerebral palsy is an example. It rids the child of motor control and may lead to permanent brain damage. Such children if not assured that they are still human beings, if they are not treated like the other kids, they will feel demoralized as they grow up. It is therefore necessary to set up cerebral palsy support groups for parents.

Such a team makes it possible for the parents to receive assistance since they meet others in similar situations. Their psyche is lifted by the realization that they do not sail in this leaking ship alone, and that the opening can be blocked for the ship to reach safely ashore. With the help of therapists, they learn about massage techniques that greatly reduce the symptoms. As a result, the frequency of attacks significantly reduces.

With determination, starting is not hard. If you are a parent with a child suffering from this condition, you are bound to meet others when you go to the hospital. What about sharing with them the need to come up with an organization? You never know, you might be surprised to realize this is what most of them actually needed.

Apart from pioneering, in case others exist who have started, you may join them. Frequent meetings are needed at the beginning to set up rules and come up with a long term plan. The input from each member is helpful and highly welcome. Do not do anything out of guilt but out of genuineness and the urge to bring positive change. Hiding the sick child inside the house is not acceptable as they need attention from a doctor. Take them to hospital and solicit funds with the help of your organization.

Every time you converge, share your fantasies, fears and other experiences. Plan how the challenges of each one in the union can be dealt with. One might be willing to help the child but money becomes a problem. With support from the association the child can definitely get treated, since it easier to seek funds from the society as a group than as an individual.

There are many ways of seeking donations once the group is registered. You can use the local churches and even mosques. Send representatives there to explain to them about your activities and your need for assistance. The government also can chip in through the budgetary allocations to health. In the wider spectrum, setting up a website explaining about the union and inviting new members and asking for donations will prove to be greatly rewarding.

Your organization will attract members of all walks of life. The majority will be affected parents. You will also have health practitioners who are interested in carrying out research in this area. The clergy and politicians might also want to associate with you since they want to appear supportive to community projects. Other people might join out their sympathetic hearts.

Plan to create awareness through seminars and other events. The masses need to be sensitized on how to handle people with cerebral palsy and offer them humanly care. You could also request for sponsorships. The children need education and a smooth climbing up the ladder of life.
