Things To Know About A Richmond Hill Naturopath

By Miranda Sweeney

Vitalism is the major belief held in naturopathy, which is a system of alternative medicine. It is also called naturopathic medicine. Vital force or vital energy, a special form of energy within the body is believed to guide major bodily functions. This energy controls body functions like adaptation, reproduction, metabolism, immunity, and growth. Any Richmond Hill naturopath avoids use of surgical procedures and administration of drugs in favor for non-invasive treatments.

Disease prevention is a major goal in naturopathy than the actual treatment. The treatment methods seek to enhance the capability of the human body to repair and heal itself without external intervention. They also make use of natural therapies. The methods are unquantifiable and not provable using scientific means. There is no application of modern science and medical principles. Treatments are currently formulated by blending ancient philosophies and medical research findings. The philosophies hold nature as the biggest healer.

The term naturopathy has its origin in the Greek and Latin languages. Its literal meaning in English is nature disease. The first usage of the term was in 1895, the same year that it was coined by John Scheel. The term and system of treatment was further popularized in the US states by Benedict Lust. Lust is viewed as the father of naturopathy in modern days. The system is currently used widely in USA and Canada.

The level of jurisdiction naturopaths are allowed dictates the scope of practice. Designation using titles such as naturopathic doctor is common in places where jurisdictions do not exist. Practitioners in this field can be classified under three major groups, that is, traditional naturopaths, naturopathic physicians, and other health care providers. Such health care renderers treat people through naturopathic methods.

The number of methods employed in this system of treatment is very high. The training acquired by the practitioner and the scope of practice determine the type of methods that can be used for treatment of diseases. Major methods include acupuncture, botanical medicine, colonic enemas, homeopathy, hair analysis, brainwave entertainment, applied kinesiology, live blood analysis, hygiene, psychological counseling, physical medicine, reflexology, and color therapy. Several forms of therapies are comprised in nature cures including exposure patients to natural elements such as fresh air, sunlight, heat, and cold.

Nutrition can also be used in treatment in which case patients may be advised to fast, abstain from alcohol, smoking, and other foods. Whole food and vegetarian diets are also highly encouraged in this system. Some research indicates that minerals, allergy treatment, vitamins, homeopathy, and botanical medicines are the most prescribed naturopathic therapeutics.

In the US and Canada, about 17 states 5 provinces respectively issue these practitioners with licenses to serve the public under certain jurisdictions. There is protection given to the designation Naturopathic doctor and other words and phrases that relate to it in such states. Licensure and regulation of naturopathic activities and practitioners is done by a board in the North America. Before receiving a license, one must take and pass a board-administered exam.

This system does not base its methods on scientific knowledge making it to be criticized and rejected by the medicine community. For instance, the existence of vital force as claimed by naturopaths cannot be proved scientifically. Also, lack of publications about the system results in many questions and criticism worldwide.
