For Best Orthotics Clinic Ottawa Is The Way To Go

By Jerry Stewart

The field of medicine that deals with the design, manufacture, and application of orthoses is referred to as Orthotics. Orthoses refer to devices that are applied externally for the purpose of modifying the functional and structural characteristics of the skeletal and neuromuscular system. The medical practitioner who is trained and specialized in Orthotics is called an orthotist, and their job involved prescribing, manufacturing, and managing orthoses. When in need of the best Orthotics clinic Ottawa is the best place to visit.

The functions of orthoses are diverse and vary with various factors. To start with, they are useful in immobilizing, guiding, and/or controlling body segments, joints, or extremities for given purposes. They control motion in a given direction in an organ. In addition, they assist in weight bearing.

The devices are useful for aiding in the rehabilitation process from injuries after casts have been removed. They can also be applied to reduce pain and accommodate or correct deformities. These devices are very important for ensuring independence on the part of patients because they can do activities on their own. They are usually applied for a limited period of time and in some cases, they may last an entire lifetime.

Orthotics as a branch of medicine relies on knowledge from different fields including engineering, pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology, and biomechanics. There are many different medical conditions that may necessitate the installation of these devices. Examples include spinal cord injury, stroke, and spina bifida also known as cerebral palsy. In some cases, performance in sports is optimized by the use of orthoses.

Today, there are different types of orthoses being prescribed to people. A good example is the foot orthosis, which serves to coreect various foot, leg, or postural issues. After surgery, pain reduction, joint protection, and support provision are achieved using Knee and Ankle orthosis. Ankle and Knee Arthoses also do biomechanical functions and enhance rehabilitation. Upper Limb orthoses are used in upper limp to offer support.

Fracture orthoses are used as alternatives to fiberglass casts and plaster. Deformities and injuries in the spinal cord are corrected and controlled by spinal orthoses. Orthoses may be prefabricated or they may be custom made for specific patients. Custom made models are usually prescribed and designed on a case by case basis. Whether prefabricated or custom made, orthoses are specialized devices that need the skills of a specialist to be fitted.

Traditionally, orthoses used to be manufactured by following a tracing of the extremity so that a well-fitted device can be created. However, that changed when plastic was adopted as the preferred material of making the devices. Today, the industry heavily relies on creation of a plaster of Paris mold of organs to be fitted.

A lot of improvement has been done to the production methods, especially with the recent advancements in technology. Three dimension printing together with CAM, CAD, and CNC machines are being employed widely in producing orthoses. Besides plastics, the device is also being produced from other materials such as metals, EVA, thermoplastics, elastic, and carbon fibre.
