The Role Of The Gallbladder Surgeon Morrilton AR

By Timothy Graham

The Upper South or Rim South is defined as those southern states that seceded after the assault on Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. In contrast, the states of the Deep South, usually defined to include Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina, which seceded first. Arkansas is special in that it is sometimes included in either one of the two blocks of states. Morrilton is a city in Arkansas with a population of less than 7,000. The county seat of Conway County and 80 kilometres northwest of Little Rock, the state capital. More than a third of the people here will have problems that place them under the care of a gallbladder surgeon Morrilton AR.

The gallbladder, also known as the cholecyst or biliary vesicle, is a small organ tucked underneath right lobe of the liver. The liver produces bile, a dark green or yellowish brown substance that aids digestion of lipids, or fats, in the small intestine. Bile is concentrated and stored in the gall bladder until it is needed. It flows through the common bile duct into the small intestine.

The cholecyst is commonly afflicted by bodies called gallstones. These form in the presence of an excess of cholesterol, the biochemical precursor of both steroid hormones and bile acids. It can also manufacture bilirubin, which is a yellow pigment that comes from the liver and is elevated in people with jaundice. In most people, gallstones hardly ever produce symptoms and they generally go unnoticed unless they cause problems or are discovered by chance on a scan that is performed for a different ailment.

If the bile duct becomes obstructed, the cholecyst can become inflamed. This is called cholecystitis and causes fever and pain. It carries a risk of infection. Most often, they go away by themselves but they may also be treated with antibiotics and rest.

When gallstones form, they may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a walnut. The longer they hang around, the more likely they are to cause problems. They may block the bile duct or block the pancreatic duct to cause a painful condition known as pancreatitis. There are a number of approaches to gallstone removal

Up until not very long ago, in order to get rid of gallstones, the surgeon had to take out the entire gallbladder. This is accomplished by making a single, large incision in the abdomen. Another approach is the "keyhole" method, in which four tiny cuts are made around the abdomen.

Morrilton's main hospital is Conway County, which belongs to the Conway Regional Health System. Gallstone problems are handled by general surgeons. Another local hospital is St. Anthony's. St. Anthony's was built in the Art Deco style from ordinary materials such as brick, concrete, and steel. It was dedicated as a 14-bed facility in 1925 by a group of Benedictine nuns.

Not far away from St. Anthony's are Morrilton Senior High School on East Harding Street, the University of Arkansas Community College on University Boulevard, and a popular superstore. The hospital is accessible via I-40 and Hwy 9. University Boulevard and East Harding are connected by a street with the intriguing name of Poor Farm Road.
