Helpful Tips For Selecting Nursing Schools

By Lena Stephenson

A career in healthcare as a nurse is an all-around good choice in today's job market for the opportunities, satisfaction, and security it provides. The first step in becoming a nurse is to choose the school where one will undergo the required training for this discipline. In order to make the process of comparing nursing schools and deciding which one to attend easier, aspiring students in Perth Amboy, NJ should consider the following.

Nursing programs vary in length and in the range of skills taught. There are certificate, diploma, and degree programs available which are taught in select colleges, universities, and vocational schools. Generally those who have earned a BSN or bachelor's of science degree have more employment opportunities, as they can begin practice as a registered nurse once they have taken and passed the licensing exam.

It takes about one year to become a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or practical nurse (LPN). Graduates must sit a licensing exam, and upon passing it, they can seek employment in clinics and hospitals. An ADN or associate's degree program involves more classroom time and the study of nursing from a more specialized perspective. It takes 2-3 years to complete.

It takes 4 years of study to graduate from a BSN program. Nurses holding this credential can either look for employment in a wide range of medical settings or they may also choose to pursue study at the graduate level such as an MSN or doctorate. Training involves the development of communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills as well as the ind-depth study of disease, treatment, and medical technology.

In addition to offering training at the level one is interested in, the chosen school should also provide a stream of study which allows learners to specialize in a particular area of nursing if desired. There are some schools which will offer the opportunity for specialization, but many of them simply provide an all-encompassing curriculum which gives equal attention to all areas. In some cases, a student may also be interested to know where the school's clinical rotations will take place.

The distance of the school's campus from one's home may be something else to consider for many students, in particular those who must depend on public transportation. It is also in one's best interest to ensure that the school has been accredited by one or both of the NLNC and the CCNE, organizations which frequently review various aspects of the school to maintain high standards.

Financial aid is an aspect that many students will also want to inquire about when considering a particular school, in most cases assistance will be available to students with demonstrable need in various forms. A pre-admission test may be required by some educational facilities, in order to assess each applicant's suitability for the health sciences, students are recommended to find out if this is required and how to properly prepare for it.

One effective way to evaluate the success of a teaching facility is to examine the NCLEX (national licensing exam) pass rates for the past five to ten years. Consistently high numbers generally indicate a strong curriculum and instruction. It is essential that students pass this exam so they may obtain a state license to work as a registered nurse.
