Choosing From Sustainable Toothbrush Alternatives

By Kimberly Wallace

Eco-friendly and degradable items are becoming something that interests more and more people nowadays, and the companies are noticing the increase of change and demand. For this reason, a few environmental inclined companies have developed and they started to create sustainable toothbrush options and other items.

If you are interested in using eco-friendlier alternatives in your life, and perhaps are already reducing the plastic use, why not change the toothbrush and cosmetic containers as well? In terms of environmental friendly toothbrushes, the bamboo ones are the most advertised and vastly known. However, it is important to research a bit before choosing one, as the low quality ones can get quite soggy and have a weird taste.

The most important or common question in this case would be if the toothbrush you are looking for is 100% compostable. The answer may surprise you, but not all of them are, as the bristles usually contains plastic. There are some 100% compostable ones, but they use pig hair, which is not an option for vegans or vegetarians. Even if you do not use the ones with pig hair, the handle is eco-friendly, unlike the usual ones with plastic and rubber, which will remain the same years after years and pollute our land and water.

Besides bamboo you can also find toothbrushes made from corn or wheat straw. Some of them can be made for recycled plastic, like one company does: they use recycled yoghurt pots and accept the products to be sent back to them once they are used and ready to be replaced, and twill be recycled again.

Some of these bamboo toothbrushes also come with fully compostable packaging as well, which is even better. They use recycled paper, with no glue or tape. The wrapper is also made from corn starch and it decomposes nicely within 30 days in commercial composters. If you do your own compost it may be take longer because the heat is lower than 55 degrees Celsius. It depends, of course, but the wrapper will surely decompose.

Some companies are also checking new ways to create the wrappers and packaging for their products, in order for them to be environmental friendly and to observe the rules in the countries they want to sell to. For example, there are tests conducted to create a new wrapper made of wood cellulose.

You may also find some other types of eco-friendly toothbrushes, such as the ones with or made of charcoal. Although the info may make them sound appealing, due to the claim that it can remove stains and prevent bad breath and even cavities, the dentists do not advise you to use them. It is quite harsh on the teeth and can strip them of their enamel. This is a serious issue and you should take great care if you used one and check the teeth if you are feeling any teeth sensitivity.

The general concern regarding the environmental issues we are facing is growing, and more and more people are taking a stand against waste and non-eco-friendly items. Plastic is one of the materials used worldwide and it is used in almost every item we use and it is non-degradable and will remain in the land or water for hundreds of years. This is why focusing on using and developing eco-friendly options is extremely important.
