How To Choose The Best Moustache Wax

By Roseann Hudson

Like most fashion, facial hair preferences follow long-term cycles. The length or style of trim may change, but there always seems to be a significant number of men who prefer wearing moustaches. The current style is trending toward much fuller and significantly longer displays than were previously popular. The best moustache wax is able to keep even the most vigorously growing facial hair looking sharp and under control.

Although modern styles do not approach the peak beard fashions of the late 19th century, men wearing facial hair today still need a common-sense way to nurture it. Beard hair differs from scalp hair, and is often much thicker, sometimes curlier, and may be a completely different color. Men who see a mirror visage with few remaining strands of hair across the top can often grow impressive beards and moustaches.

While rapid growth can be an advantage, the reality of wearing a big moustache hits at mealtimes. To avoid being offensive to others while eating, the hair must constantly be re-parted or swiped with a napkin to remove bits of food or droplets of moisture, and biting down on a wayward strand is an unpleasant sensation. The solution is simple, and refreshingly low-tech.

Rather than opting for hair sprays or gels containing fragrances and other potentially irritating ingredients that may cause discomfort when applied directly under the nose, a type of naturally produced holding medium works best. While there are variations on the basic formula, most use an organic wax produced by bees. It is usually mixed with various types of natural oils and skin emollients.

Most are sold in small tubs, tubes, or in handy stick forms. They all feature varying degrees of holding power designed for nearly any imaginable style. If facial hair is naturally wispy or thin, soft wax products may be ideal. They keep the fragile ends from fraying, are not terribly obvious to other people, and keep new growth looking good until it reaches the desired length.

Thicker formulations are sturdier, and can keep a rakishly curved tip from unfolding or drooping. They are able to support even the most stylized handlebars, and are easy to use when touch-up is needed. Also important is selecting a color that best matches true skin tone and age. A white-haired septuagenarian with a coal-black display is not only unsettling aesthetically, but a little embarrassing.

With the right tools, application becomes trouble-free and easy. Most brands include a small-toothed comb designed to speed the morning routine while spreading color without creating dark spots. Some styles require a bit more wax, and many men find a wax-remover helpful in preventing damage or discomfort during cleanup. Some men use a hair dryer to soften cold wax, but scissors for trimming are the only additional requirement.

Some formulations may contain petroleum derivatives, but there are also products that boast a more natural list of ingredients favored by many men. Vegan formulas avoid using any animal or insect-derived products, and there are even soy-free variations.
