The Function Of Drain Tube After Surgery

By Aimee Schwartz

For someone to be cured, he or she might have to undergo different types of treatment. This would heavily depend on the type of condition that a certain patient is suffering from. When it is too complicated and too risky, the only option would be to perform a surgery. During operations, there are different instruments being used. The utilization of the said instruments would highly depend on the discretion of the surgeon.

For example, there are surgical drains. You can see that there are times when drain tube after surgery is attached near the place where they performed the operation. It is still being used today. However, there are always debates regarding the need for it. Of course, there are also risks to be considered when using this. And because of the many unresolved issues, the medical community has different stand points in this.

When the surgery is over, it is attached near the area where the operation worked on. This is used to drain out all of the possible substances that might contaminate the organs or tissues that were operated on. Aside from liquid such as blood, gas is also one of the elements that needs to be drained for safety purposes.

When it comes to choosing whether the tube should be connected or not, the decision would be based on the direction of the surgeon in charge. They are also the ones to decide which part of the body will the tube be attached. Aside from that, the type of the drain will be decided by the surgeon as well. These are crucial points in ensuring that drains would work as they are supposed to.

There are different types of drains that could be used. The difference usually lies in the mechanism that it has when it comes to sucking out the excess liquids and gas. But there are specific types that are used for liquids only and there are also those that are used for other substances. The operating surgeon should determine the type based on what probable substance might be accumulating in the area.

The mechanism for these devices are almost the same. They are attached to a pressure pump. The pressure should be set to the right amount enough for sucking out the excess substances. This is done to avoid any further complications in the affected part. It can be turned on periodically or it can also be run continuously.

There are times when the tubes can be dislodged and get detached from the body. You should be mindful about these things because it can be the main cause for an infection to happen. If you can feel that it has been removed, you should notify someone immediately so that it can be sanitized and be fastened back inside.

Having the drain can have several functions. First would be the measurement of the liquid being drained. The system also needs these fluids. However, it is important that they do not accumulate in a certain area because it would be life threatening for the patient. The measurement is done to determine the amount of fluid to be replaced.

The monitoring of the amount is done for one other important purpose. And this is to try and see if the amount being sucked changes or stays the same. The moment the amount increases, there is a chance that there is something wrong inside.
