When Are Porcelain Veneers Right For You?

By Harry Izzo

When it comes to dental procedures, understandably most people prefer anything that is more natural looking. Today invisible braces are preferred over the metal kind. Metal braces are not comfortable and prevent many people from showing a full smile in social situations. Conversely, porcelain veneers are worth showing off your teeth for.

However, just like invisible braces, veneers are not for everyone. You will want to consult with your dentist in order to decide if this procedure fits your situation.

First of all, your teeth have to be healthy and if they are not they have to be fixed. The reason they have to be fixed is because veneers attach to the enamel of your teeth and if your teeth are unhealthy that gives the veneer very little to cling to.

If you have chipped or cracked teeth then porcelain veneers are best used on them. Smokers with stained teeth might find it better and cheaper to opt for veneers. The veneers hide all this staining that occurs from smoking. Veneers simply cover over the problem. The veneers also cover over broken or chipped teeth that are otherwise healthy. Because they are cosmetic in nature insurance does not cover the cost. So if you're the frugal type then you may want to reconsider.

On the other hand the veneers can last up to 10 years before you need to replace them, so in the long run they are not such a bad investment. The veneers are bonded where the enamel should be. They are permanent so once you undergo the procedure there is no going back. They are not like dentures or invisible braces that can be removed whenever you want. The veneers are only removed at replacement time.

Some habits that people have might be a problem for them if they get veneers. For example, if you're the type of person that likes to chew on ice from your soda this could hurt your veneers. Chewing ice probably got you into trouble in the first place and it is definitely a habit you want to quit after dental implants are installed. Chewing on ice can damage the thin shells attached to the enamel of your teeth. Any kind of grinding has to be avoided.

If you can break this habit and stop grinding your teeth then it is highly recommended that you have this dental procedure done. Pay your local dentist a visit and this dental procedure will give you back your perfect smile.
